Tinea cruris, also
known as jock itch, is a specific form of tinea due to a dermatophyte fungus
affecting the groin, pubic region, and adjacent thigh. It presents as an acute
or chronic asymmetrical rash.
Tinea cruris affects
both sexes, with a male predominance. All ages can develop tinea cruris,
adolescents and adults more commonly than children and elderly.
Causes
Tinea cruris is caused
by a dermatophyte fungus, most commonly Trichophyton rubrum and Epidermophyton
floccosum.
Clinical features

Tinea cruris usually begins in the inguinal skin fold
on one side which can evolve to become a bilateral but characteristically
asymmetrical rash.

The rash can extend down the inner aspect of the thigh
or to the lower abdomen and pubic area.
·
Involvement of the buttocks and perineum may be seen
but there is typically sparing of the penis, scrotum, and vulva.

Moist and exudative rash in acute tinea cruris
·
Chronic tinea cruris presents as large well-demarcated
scaly plaque with a raised border and central clearing.

Scale is most prominent at the edge of the plaque

THUJA OCCIDENTALIS
Thuja occidentalis is another effective

sensitive to touch. The eruptions are accompanied by violent itching or
burning. Scratching and cold bathing makes the condition worse.
Locally applied Thuja oil or ointment is found to be effective.
CHRYSAROBINUM
Chrysarobinum is best for jock itch with violent itching. There is violent itching between thighs and genital area. The skin is dry, and scaly eruptions are seen sometimes pus underneath.
SEPIA
Sepia is effective for jock in the groin and genitals with much scratching, but scratching provides no relief. The skin is rough, hard or cracked.
PSORINUM
Psorinum is another effective medicine for jock itch with intense itching, and burning which is worse from warmth of bed. The skin is dirty and have a dingy look.
BARYTA CARBONICUM
Baryta carb is prescribed when jock itch occurs with intolerable itching and crawling sensation. The person feels a peculiar burning sensation and needle – loke pricks with violent itching.
ARSENICUM IODATUM
Arsenicum iodatum is best for jock itch where the skin is dry, scaly, flaking and erythematous. Itching worse from washing.
TELLURIUM
Ring shaped lesions, offensive odor from the
affected part. Severe itching. Skin dry, and hot.
